Local Municipal Census Registration (Certificado de Empadronamiento)

Once you have purchased a property in Spain, you should register with your local Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) – this is applicable to residents and non residents alike.

The registration on the Municipal census, will also allow you the right to vote in Municipal elections and even be elected to office.

The Certificado de Empadronamiento will be required for various different “day to day” transactions e.g. when registering with your local Doctor, purchasing a car, applying for Residency etc. In most official arenas, the certificate will need to be no more than three months old (from issue date).

The process to apply for this Certificate is simply a request submitted in person to your local Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) who will require the following paperwork;

  • Original passport and copy
  • Copy of your NIE Certificate
  • Proof of address – Title Deeds or Registered Rental Contract.

Once your application is submitted, allow 2/3 working days for the Certificate to be issued. Locally, a charge of €3.00 / €5.00 will be applied by the issuing Town Hall.
